June 21st is a significant day in the Gregorian calendar. It is that day of the year when the globe celebrates World Music Day and also witnesses the longest and shortest days in the northern and southern hemispheres respectively (most of the time)!! In 2012, there has been a slight change! The longest/shortest day this year has been pre-poned by a day to June 20th.

Fortunately, World Music Day continues to be unaffected by sun rays and cosmic changes. It will therefore be celebrated in most parts of the world today – June 21st. The World Music Day or Fête de la Musique tradition began in France, Europe, in 1976. Since its inception, musicians – both amateurs and maestros – perform free of cost to large audiences today.

The most interesting part of the celebrations is that it is a melting-pot for different genres of music. Artists and bands across genres perform together or independently at various locations. What’s more, entry is free!

It is obvious that today, almost every city and town will host some kind of music performance or concert! For instance, numerous Indian artists across genres are performing at the One World Fusion Extravaganza event in Hyderabad, Udit Narayan is performing at Chandigarh, (grand old) Queen Victoria’s piano is being re-instated at the Victoria Museum in Kolkata, and much more. So, write to us and tell us how you plan to celebrate the World Music Day!!
